Sasha's father used to be married to Ray's mom, and the two are no longer on speaking terms. The Whole Thing Together is about teenagers Sasha and Ray, who share three half-sisters, a bedroom, a childhood full of memories at their idyllic summer house - and yet they've never met. Sixteen years later, that book is still a favorite - and it looks like Ann Brashares' new book is going to be every bit as wonderful (and emotional). What we loved about those books back in the day was their honest portrayal of friendship, family, and sisterhood (and their less honest portrayal of a pair of jeans that fit everyone in a friendship group). ![]() ![]() The heaviest of burdens is therefore simultaneously an image of life’s most intense fulfillment. But in the love poetry of every age the woman longs to be weighed down by the man’s body. The heaviest of burdens crushes us, we sink beneath it, it pins us to the ground. That is why Nietzsche called the idea of eternal return the heaviest of burdens (“ das grösste Schwergewicht”).Ī life that disappears once and for all, that does not return, is then like a shadow, without weight, dead in advance, and whether it was horrible, beautiful, or sublime, its horror, sublimity, and beauty mean nothing. In the world of eternal return, the weight of unbearable responsibility lies heavy on every move we make. The idea of eternal return is a mysterious one: to think that everything recurs as we once experienced it, and that the recurrence itself recurs ad infinitum! It is a terrifying prospect. ![]() ![]() ![]() “I can handle trouble.” Lysandra aimed her arrow at the target on a tree twenty paces away and let go. “You speak your mind far too much, little Lys.” “Hush,” Gregor warned, but he was laughing. In this BBC version, there wasn’t any travelling company of performers to be found which was very intriguing.Īlso, the female lead of ‘Sleeping Murder’ is already married in the BBC version whereas the ITV version had her engaged to a distant fiancé before falling in love with someone else. In my opinion, the biggest sin a LitRPG can make is to inundate the protagonist with powerups and skills they never explore or use to the fullest. He's gifted myriad skills and powerups, each one used and discarded, never to be used cleverly to overcome adversity, or cleverly at all. Several times clearly pointing out every one of his successes are because of luck. The author basically rubs your face in it too. Because he sure as shit doesn't do it himself. This never stops, it's the way Felix overcomes every obstacle in his path - or rather, I should rephrase that to say it's how the author has Felix overcome said obstacles. To combat this 'inbalance,' the author just throws bullshit, arbitrary and non-deterministic power-ups at him CONSTANTLY so that he can just survive. ![]() ![]() This book throws absurd hurdles (read: warheads) at our protagonist, ones he has no reasonable or credulous way to overcome. The fun of this genre is having a protagonist either outsmart the system they're subjected to to come out victorious, or struggle against it, desperately flailing in the face of adversity. I feel like I could write an essay on why I despised this book so much, but most of it will probably just be incoherent ramblings about personal preferences regarding fantasy and litrpg fiction in general.
